Congratulations

93! It was about time ;-) Congratulations and thanks for doing this. I think this is a great contribution to the thelemic community.

As an introduction... Now let me see... Well, I'm 23, philosophy student, mexican, probably the only thelemite in the whole of the Yucatan peninsula. Let's face it, there aren't many thelemites in México at all. That always makes me think about disputes and the general petty rivalry that one finds on the small thelemic communities. It's like the actors guild here in Mérida, there must be less than 50 actors (theater actors, directors, and so on), they're practically starving to death, but that doesn't stop them from killing each other. Self-mutilation. I see this among thelemites some time, horrible attacks over some theory or abstract ideas, meanwhile Thelema grows slowly and newbies are treated horribly some times because they get in the way of the advanced students who may not be disturbed!

I don't know, I just find it funny. Like that song from Scholar, "Thelema is dead", it's very funny to see how thelemites that have been thelemites for over a decade seem to think that they are the pinnacle of humanity, as if they had said all that there was to say, when the internet is working it's charm into making people interested in Thelema in places where there is no OTO, no esoteric tradition, no nothing. I guess it's natural, all englishmen think all the world thinks like an englishman, the same with americans.... and yes, the same applies to me I guess!

Well, enough ranting! You can count on me in dropping by to ask and comment.

Re: Congratulations

93 asclepio,

Thank you for the kind words; good to see you on here.

Like I said in the Editorial for the first issue, there is a lot of division in the Thelemic community which is both a sign of its fertility & division. The Journal stands as a symbol & talisman of divergent opinions coming together relatively harmoniously ;)

Hmm, There is so much to tell, and I dont want to write a book here. Im 26 and have been studying tarot and the tree of life for close to 11 years along with Qabalah. Not a thelemite, but a member of the Esoteric Order of Dagon, EOD. But that is a whole other story (another book). I am interested in alternative history, science, magick, psychadelics, psychology, reading natal charts, musick etc. Ive been playing drums for 16 years. Good to be here and I hope others come soon.

Re: IAO

93 Reis & welcome. Hope you found the first issue of the Journal enjoyable.

Honestly I havent read it the first journal entries, or any of them for that matter. Crowley to me is like high fiber cereal. Every once in a while I need a good pooo. Like I said in another post, I am not a savant like Crowley, and he sure was a "beast" of a savant. There was some talk at a conference in London that his struggle with asthma created a constant trance like state which he utilized. Quite an interesting old bastard in more ways than one. THere are a few selected works of his which I study constantly, but to study it ALL is, well....for fucks sake! He was a master of English, and yes makes me feel stupid most of the time, but should that make me feel guilty. FUCK NO! Right now the Book of Thoth is my main book. I have read the Book of Lies for a good while but I sold on ebay to a cheap and lucky truth soldier. So much information out there to make your head spin.

I like this forum because it is liberal. Not in a politcal sense, of course! But, the fact the you leave room for discussion in the opening dialogue which is not directly and intrisinctly tied to crowlianity.

Re: Honestly

93 Reis,

If you like, the first issue of the Journal is available for free (just click 'Current Issue' above), and there are no articles BY Crowley though many reference him for obvious reasons.

Book of Thoth is a great book - a necessity for anyone into the deeper mysteries the Tarot yields.

93 All.
I am a 36 year old mother of 2 shining stars and partner to an amazing man. My spiritual studies started very young with some traditional family craft that led me to seek more such as wicca, Egyptian studies, native American, Goddess Worship and so on. About 3 years ago I took the plunge into higher consciousness and began studies of Qabalah, Thelema, Yoga, some Buddhism and anything else I could get my hands on.

I enjoy astrology and follow the sky carefully. I am a psychologist by degree but do not practice. I work for my family business instead. Other interest include a lot of higher consciousness studies, Transpersonal Psychology, the study of psychedelic drugs for treatment of mental disorders and physical conditions, social justice, nature preservation and so on. I am a formal initiate of A.'.A'. as well.

Just happy to be here, where ever that may be.

I look forward to sharing here and seeing the journal grow. I am still reading all of the material that has been posted on myspace.

93 sororvin, Welcome, it

93 sororvin,
Welcome, it will certainly be very interesting to read your posts, that degree on psychology must come in handy every once in a while during the path, right?

Nice to meet you, may I ask a question? You're a mother of two and a thelemite, that's very interesting and I was wondering, how exactly do you manage your children's education?

I don't have kids but my girlfriend is studying philosophy of education, and practical philosophy, she says the best way would be complete freedom. I disagree personally, I think I'd like to raise my children, if I ever have any, with spiritual and intelectual freedom but at the same time clearly marking the boundaries, schedules and that sort of stuff, steady routine, etc. That way, maybe there can be a balance between safety and freedom. But, at the same time, what the hell do I know?!?! I don't have any kids, the closest thing are my cats.

So, how do you do it, complete freedom? "do what thou wilt" since they're kids?

I hope I'm not bothering with questions, but I've never had the chance to ask.

Re: Soror VLN

93 Soror VLN,

Nice to meet you. On the subject of psychedelic drugs for treatment of mental disorders, etc... have you seen this recent news article about LSD breakthrough in mental patients?

I am glad you are enjoying the material, and... welcome!

Greetings

Hi everyone,

I'm Steve Cranmer, who some of you may know from heruraha.net, lashtal.com, and erwinhessle.com. (Maybe also from Usenet's alt.magick if you were there between about 1990 and 1995...) I consider myself a Thelemite, but that's a relatively recent phenomenon. I've been interested in the Golden Dawn, Freemasonry, Rosicrucianism, etc.; the general post-Renaissance Hermeticism deal.

I'm also a professional astronomer. Being both a scientist and a Thelemite is probably an unusual combination, but it shouldn't be all that strange for Scientific Illuminists like us, hm? I'm not interested so much in the "paranormal" aspects of magical practice, but more in the transformative and symbolic aspects of ritual and a broader "Thelemic" way of living in the world.

I'm in the middle of a large Thelemic writing project (which will probably end up as a free lulu.com book in, gulp, a year or two), but I'm also thinking about what I might be able to contribute to the Journal in the nearer future.

Here's to the success of this site!

Steve

93 and hello!

I am glad to have found this new journal and forum. I am looking forward to seeing it grow and learning from it.

I am a thelemic musician, a mother of seven daughters and a freelance writer. I have deep attachments to thelema, although I am truly only just beginning my studies and my pursuit of the path. Our music project is called ctephin, and my husband and I run the Umbrella Noize Collective net-label which has free downloads of experimental and noise music.

Nice to meet you. Im glad the Journal can bring together different 'strains' of Thelemites like scientists & musicians. Umbrella Noize Collective sounds pretty cool.

93 and Thank you for the

93 and Thank you for the welcome.

Psychology and Crowley are so intertwined that The Work itself leans more toward the psychological aspects than the spiritual (personal opinion). I feel this way simply because I am of the opinion that for one to reach higher levels of consciousness and spiritual connection the psychological/mental blocks must first be removed. The Work (initially) is a tool to remove these blocks therefore allowing the aspirant to grow beyond the lower self and toward higher centers. There is a new degree called Transpersonal Psychology which incorporates psychology, spirituality and physical health. It is my goal to receive my PhD in this field and counsel. For now, I use psychology and spirituality in all situations life presents.

As for my children, you ask how I manage their education...can you elaborate a bit, please? I am not sure what you are asking. I have one son who is almost 11 and another son who is only 14 months old so I have experience with 1 regarding formal education so far!

We raise our boys by example. The Work is living it, after all. Having a strong will (as children do) and Do what thou wilt are two completely different things. Teaching the children by example and with written teachings to discover and define their Will is not something I can easily explain. Freedom of mind and spirit is something I agree with but there are ways to allow a child to "feel" that freedom with slight manipulation when needed ;-) ...and it is necessary in raising children to set boundaries.

I think the biggest issue I face is the Christian thing...allow them the experience, deny them the experience. I have done both. For now, my children do not and will not attend church. I allowed my oldest to go “hang out” with friends and so on but it got to be too confusing for him, I felt like a complete hypocrite and the entire thing was messy. It took a lot of time to de-program him from that experience and to earn back my creditability as his non-Christian mother (kids ask a lot of questions). This has been tricky particularly for us as we are in the Bible belt and any deviation from holy rolling Christians is not as acceptable here as it may be other places. And, there are no stable paganish groups around here. Luckily, we have friends who we do gather with and they have children so this gives my son a chance to see there are actually other people out there like us…lol.

Hope this helps a little. Ask away. No bother.
Wishing Well Upon Your Will.

93! I am glad you posted that

93!
I am glad you posted that article. It is amazing what these drugs (in correct form) have done for people mentally and physically. I note, "in correct form" simply because I do not want anyone to get the idea that street LSD is therapeutic simply because one never knows how the compound was derived. The correct chemical composition that creates LSD has done wonders for people. Mushrooms are even better. There are several studies going on in other countries right now using Psilocybin. There is a great discussion about all of this at myspace group, "The Void" right now, just so you all know.

93-
I would like to know about you!

Re: IAO131

93,

I study many things including Thelema, occultism, psychology, Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism, religions in general, sociology, neuroscience, physics, etc. and I synthesize them often. I intially came from a background of Eastern Mysticism, heavily influenced by the Tao Teh King and the Bhagavad Gita. You could say my three 'gurus' (or my 'trinity' if you are feeling polemical) include Crowley, Jung, and Nietzsche - each of them was a philosopher, psychologist, and mystic, though each emphasizing their own unique way.

I write a bunch of stuff that I put on my website http://iao131.cjb.net and also http://iao131.livejournal.com if you are into LJ. I created this Journal and website largely to collect contemporary Thelemic authors in one place, but also to create a place that symbolically stands for different opinions being shared with respect. This was in response to my experience with various Thelemic (physical and internet) communities where many people often have good opinions but are criticized disrespectfully and ineffectively, and how many divergent Thelemites seem to write great things but never come together to share their ideas as a whole (hopefully that is done for, at least with the publishing of the first issue of the Journal of Thelemic Studies). I am currently focusing on studying behavioral neuroscience, the role of the observer in quantum mechanics, and I'm learning Hoch-Deutsch. Tag ;)

Re: the LSD article... There is a great organization called MAPS (maps.org) that funds psychedelic research. Right now there seems to be a bit of interest around these substances for treating cluster headaches and anxiety. I am glad the scientific community is both interested and allowed to research these things in these times.

Hello all

Do as thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law

I am 30 years old, a father of three beautiful girls, and practicing Thelemite. My interest in the occult started when I was only sixteen when I first read "The Book of Lies" which piqued my interest in Crowley, the Qabbalah, and Magick in general and prompted my study of esoteric writings for the last fourteen years. I am an avid user of the Thoth deck and it never ceases to amaze me. Only recently have I started to seek membership into formal Orders and have become a student of the AA. I also have become involved with a coven of likewise Pagans in the last few years and together we have developed traditions we will pass down to our children. I am really looking forward to stimulated conversation with other Thelemites.

Re: Hello all

93 ysundryaal,

Glad to have you here! I hope you found the first issue of the Journal enjoyable (click 'Current Issue' above if you have not read it yet), and also that you find the conversations stimulating... Welcome.

I think it's amazing that

I think it's amazing that people out there are starting to come together in a broad based structure that allows individuals to pursue thier own ultimately individual Truth while still recognizing the common bonds that link us all together. I look forward to hearing more from you all. Do what thou wilt!

Re: I think it's amazing that

93 Spiralwind,

This is what Thelema stands for, and the Journal of Thelemic Studies attempts to be a microcosm of this openness. Glad to have you here.

Currently studying Digital Compositing and Visual Effects at Stafforsdshire University England, graduation is not that far off now. The goal is to become a Digital Compositing artist and Visual Effects editor and work in film and tv.
Meta-programming and the structures and techniques of systems of belief have been a huge interest to me since I was 15 years old. Practice currently consists of Chaos Magick using Thelema, Luciferianism, Planetary Magick, Qabbala and Zen as well as a healthy dose of Discordianism as the primary opperational paradigms.
The goal of utilising these esoteric systems is Liberation and freedom from programmed behaviour patterns and domestication.
Reading is my passion.

Looking forward to reading more from this site and from the JoTS.

the study of art lead me lucidly into the study of magick, and here i am.

art is the common denominator in all empires. i enjoy making room for constant analogies between aspects in the universe. i also enjoy repelling creatures who are unable to appreciate that & come to Fixed Conclusions.

the only people i get along with naturally happen to be people who's lives actually improve with their own application of personal practical magick.
