About Us:

The Society of Scientific Illuminism launched on the Vernal Equinox of 2009, e.v., the Thelemic New Year (Year 105).

The Society of Scientific Illuminism is a group of individuals dedicated to the principles of Scientific Illuminism as stated primarily in The Equinox and other writings of the A.'.A.'. The Society of Scientific Illuminism is NOT affiliated with the A.'.A.'. in any official way, nor is this Society the result of any demands of any person in any A.'.A.'. branch. It is simply inspired by the A.'.A.'.'s spirit & methods.

We adhere to the motto of The Equinox, the official organ of the A.'.A.'., which is "The Method of Science, the Aim of Religion." The Aim of Religion is, to a Probationer in the A.'.A.'., "To prosecute the Great Work: which is, to obtain a scientific knowledge of the nature and powers of my own being." The Method of Science is primarily that of experimentation, naturalism, and pragmatism with their corollaries: reproducibility, comparison, critical analysis, objectivity, accuracy, and clarity. The projects of The Society of Scientific Illuminism are an extension of this simple motto.

The Society of Scientific Illuminism approaches these mystical and magical endeavors as psychological Experiments, capable of description, analysis, comparison, and criticism.

"Projects" of different methods used by different people (e.g. scrying, evocation) will be categorized and specific Experiments that are recorded accurately will be documented therein.

We close with this excerpt from the "Editorial" in The Equinox Vol.1 No.1:

"The time has come to speak plainly, and so far as may be in the language of the multitude.

Thus, the Brothers of the A ∴ A ∴ announce themselves without miracle or mystery. It is easy for every charlatan to perform wonders, to bewilder and even to deceive not only fools but all persons, however shrewd, untrained in observation; nor does the trained observed always succeed instantly in detecting the fraud. Again, what the A ∴ A ∴ propose to do is to enable such men as are capable of advancement to a higher interpretation of manhood to do so; and the proof of their ability lies in their success, and not in any other irrelevant phenomenon. The argument from miracles is a non sequitur...

The Brothers of the A ∴ A ∴ have set their faces against all charlatanism, whether of miracle-mongering or obscurantism; and all those persons who have sought reputation or wealth by such means may expect ruthless exposure, whether of their vanity or their dishonesty; for by no gentler means can they be taught.

The Brothers of the A ∴ A ∴ will advise simple experiments, and will describe them, by the pens of their chosen delegates, in the simplest available language. If you fail to obtain good results, blame either yourself or Their method, as you will; if you succeed, thank either yourself or Them, as you will."
